Last weekend, I took photos of the second annual Mikel T. Olson Memorial Golf Tournament. As you may recall, Mikel is a friend of mine, who I have known since we were 11 years old. He passed away in late 2009 of congenital heart failure. He attended college at the University of Northern Colorado, where he was a member and president of Kappa Sigma. His brothers, now alumni, organized the event. I spent the day Saturday with his mom and younger sisters. We drove around the course in a golf cart taking pictures all day. It was quite windy and chilly, but we laughed most of the way due to crazy driving and close calls. It was a long day, but it was fun. I went to dinner with the Olson's after.
The next day, May 1st, his birthday, we gathered at the Olson's house to celebrate his life. Our group of friends used to get together there every year for Mikel's birthday, so it seemed appropriate. We visited, had sandwiches and cake, and we wrote messages on balloons, which we released into the sky. The Olson's asked people to bring donations to give to Shiloh House, a home for troubled and abused children, which is where Nick works. Mikel worked in the same field as Nick. After realizing this, his family decided to donate to Shiloh House in Mikel's memory.
I think Mikel would be pleased to see all of his friends and family together.
